Easy recipe for making spicy sambar

Sambar is a very popular dish in South Indian cuisine, which is served with idli, dosa or vada. It is prepared with lentils, vegetables and spices, which is not only delicious but also beneficial for health. If you want to make spicy sambar at home, then this easy recipe is for you.

Material:

– 1 cup tur (arhar) dal

– 1 small piece of tamarind

– 1 onion (finely chopped)

– 1 tomato (chopped)

– 1 carrot (chopped)

– 1 potato (chopped)

– 5-6 curry leaves

– 2 green chillies (sliced)

– 1 tsp sambhar powder

– 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

– 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder

– 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

– 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds

– 2-3 dried red chillies

– salt to taste

– 2 teaspoons oil

– Green coriander (for decoration)

Method of Preparation:

1. Boil the lentils: First, wash the tur dal and soak it in water for 15-20 minutes. After this, add the lentils, turmeric powder, and some water in a cooker and boil it till 2-3 whistles. Let the lentils cook well and then mash it.

2. Prepare tamarind pulp: Soak tamarind in hot water for 10-15 minutes. After this, mash it to prepare the pulp and filter it to separate the seeds and pulp.

3. Cook the vegetables: Heat oil in a pan and temper it by adding mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and dried red chillies. Then add onion, green chillies, carrots and potatoes and cook on medium flame for 5-7 minutes.

4. Add sambar powder: Now add tomatoes and sambar powder to it. Mix the veggies well and cook them till they become soft.

5. Add dal and tamarind pulp: When the vegetables are cooked, add boiled dal and tamarind pulp to it. Add water as required and salt and bring to a boil. Let the sambar cook on low flame for 10-15 minutes so that all the spices and flavours blend well.

6. Garnish: Finally, take out the sambar in a bowl and garnish it with coriander leaves.

Your spicy sambar is ready. Serve it with hot idli, dosa or vada and enjoy the South Indian flavours!

Suggestion:

– You can also add vegetables of your choice like ladyfinger, pumpkin, brinjal etc. in sambar.

– If you like sambar more spicy, then you can increase the amount of green chillies and red chilli powder.
