4.5 magnitude earthquake recorded near Sydney

An earthquake struck northwest of Sydney on Saturday morning, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, leaving thousands of people without power.

According to the report, the Seismological Research Center recorded the earthquake near the town of Muswellbrook, in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales state, about 170 km northwest of Sydney. The earthquake occurred at 5:58 am local time. Geoscience Australia reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of five kilometers and people felt it in Sydney. According to the report, after the earthquake, people in 2,748 homes and other places in and around Muswellbrook had to face the problem of power outage.


NSW Police said they were not aware of any injuries or damage to infrastructure in the quake-hit area, which is one of Australia's largest coal mining regions.
