Between April and July 24, transactions worth 80 lakh crores were done through UPI in the country. In the era of rapidly increasing digital transactions, cases of money being transferred to another person's UPI ID by mistake are coming up. In such a situation, some quick steps can save your money. Let's understand.
It is important to report the mistake immediately to get the funds back. Contact your bank or UPI service provider immediately. The sooner you lodge a complaint, the greater the chances of getting your wrong payment refunded. If you delay in complaining, it is also possible that your payment will not be refunded.
Share the transaction details, including the incorrect UPI ID, amount and date, with your bank or UPI provider as most banks and UPI providers have processes to deal with such disputes.
If possible, contact the person to whom you made the payment by mistake. Politely explain the mistake and request a refund. This may lead to the quickest resolution. Here you have to maintain decency.
If other methods fail, complain to NPCI, which oversees the UPI system. It will investigate and resolve the issue. You can complain 24×7 by visiting the NPCI website or calling its toll free number 1800-120-1740.
Keep all documents related to the transaction and complaint safe. As a last resort, consider filing a police report if you suspect fraud. If the police do not take your complaint seriously, you can also approach the court.
