LIV Golf huge's financial peace offering and first merger move rejected

The DP World Tour have opted to turn down a deal offered by LIV Golf that would see the fines owed by the breakaway league's players settled, in exchange to allow its members to compete freely on the European circuit.

The DP World Tour's relationship with the LIV setup has been a fractured one ever since the latter's formation back in the summer of 2022. Almost a year on from the very first LIV event, the DP World Tour were succesful in an arbitration case that gave them the power to fine and suspend its members for competing in 'conflicting' events on the breakaway circuit.

This led to a whole host of big European names including Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood resigning their DP World Tour membership to avoid further sanctioning.

More recently that issue has become a talking point in regard to two of Europe's key Ryder Cup players in Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. Both Rahm and Hatton have appealed the punishments put to them by the DP World Tour, which will allow them to compete on the circuit this autumn, thus remaining eligible to compete at the Ryder Cup next year.

Despite this, former world No. 1 Rahm has revealed he has no plans to pay the fines against him moving forward. "I’m not a big fan of the fines," the Spaniard said last week. "I’ve been outspoken about the fines. I don’t intend to pay the fines and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen."

In a bid to bring an end to the dispute, LIV bosses have reportedly reached out to the DP World Tour to settle the issue according to Sports Illustrated. Mirror Sport have contacted both LIV Golf and the DP World Tour for comment.

Per the report, the breakaway league reached out with an offer of free movement between the tours in August, with a settlement fee paid by the league to the European circuit, estimated to be £6 million. LIV bosses also offered an exemption category into the Asian Tour's 10 International Series events, that would allow DP World Tour members to compete.

It is claimed the DP World Tour decided to rejected the offer. As part of the deal LIV also offered not to host events on the same week as some of the European circuit's marque tournaments. This week for example, LIV's Team Championship in Dallas will take place at the same time as the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Representatives from both sides were said to have met in August, but were unable to iron out an agreement. This will see a number of Europe's big stars miss the flagship event, including Hatton, who was crowned champion at the Surrey setup back in 2020.
