Utility News Desk!! Today in the cabinet meeting, a decision has been taken on a big scheme to farmers. This decision is to the government's Pradhan Mantri Asha Yojana (PM Asha Yojana). What is PM Asha Yojana, know in detail.

What is PM Asha Yojana?

Under the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM ASHA Yojana), there is a plan to buy pulses and oilseeds at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Under this, the government decides to buy pulses and oilseed crops at MSP. The central government has been running the price support scheme for pulses, oilseeds, copra and others since 2018. If the price of the crop is less than the MSP, then the difference in the price is paid.

There are 3 components of PM Asha Yojana-

  • Price Support Scheme(PSS)
  • Depreciation Payment Scheme (PDPS)
  • Pilot Private Procurement and Stockist Scheme(PPPS)

How will farmers benefit?

Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan is a comprehensive scheme to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers. It includes new schemes of Price Support Scheme (PSS) and Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS) with some modifications and a pilot of Private Procurement and Stockist Scheme (PPPS).

This is how the plan works

Under PM-AASHA, States or Union Territories are offered a choice between PSS and PPPS in a given procurement season in respect of a particular oilseed crop for the entire state. Pulses and copra are procured under PSS. Only one scheme i.e. PSS or PDPS can be run in a State in respect of a commodity.

Gets adequate return on production cost

Further, States have the option to launch PPSS on a pilot basis in selected APMCs of the district involving participation of private stockists for oilseeds. Further, the procurement of wheat, paddy and coarse cereals is done under the existing schemes of the Department of Food and Public Distribution and cotton is procured under the existing schemes of the Ministry of Textiles. This is helping farmers to get enhanced MSP which provides adequate returns on the cost of production.
