On the second day of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday, veteran off-spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin top-scored with a superb 113 as India’s first innings finished at 376 in 91.2 overs.

Pacer Hasan Mahmud of Bangladesh took 5-83 to complete consecutive five-wicket scores in Test cricket, while Taskin Ahmed took 3-55. On the second day, Bangladesh took the second new ball, and Ashwin, who had come back from 102 not out, took India’s innings to 339/6 with a thick edge over the slip cordon for four.

In his second over of the day, Taskin Ahmed broke the 199-run partnership when he shaped the ball into Ravindra Jadeja, giving him a little advantage on his hesitant poke straight to the keeper. The left-handed batsman was 14 runs shy of his century.

After hitting four boundaries with a kitchen sink throw at the balls, Akash Deep slid off Taskin, who got a top edge and was caught at mid-off for 17. Ashwin mistimed his drive and surrendered a catch to mid-off, allowing Taskin to take his third wicket of the day and earn a standing ovation from the small Chepauk crowd. Ashwin had fallen for 113 from 133 balls.

In less than an hour on the second day of play, Mahmud put an end to India’s first innings when he got Jasprit Bumrah to edge to third slip, giving him five wicket hauls in a row in Test matches. Additionally, the pacer made history by becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to capture five wickets in an Indian Test match.

Summary: India defeated Bangladesh 376 in 91.2 overs (Ashish Mukherjee 113, Ravindra Jadeja 86; Hasan Mahmud 5-83, Taskin Ahmed 3-55)
