New Delhi: On Thursday, September 19, the opening day of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai, the youthful batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, the team’s standout opener, once again showed his value. While India continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and hit a half-century, Jaiswal put out a strong display.

With his fifty, Jaiswal became the first batsman to score over 750 runs in his first ten innings at home in 147 years. George Headley of the West Indies had held the record with 747 runs in 1935.

Most Test runs will be scored at home by batters after the first ten innings.

On the first day of the first Test in Chennai on Thursday, Bangladeshi fast bowler Hasan Mahmud stunned the Indian batting order by taking four crucial wickets, bringing the hosts down to 176/6 at tea.

In the cloudy circumstances, Hasan provided support for his captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s choice to bowl first by taking three wickets early on and adding more after lunch.

At the second break, it was a dramatic turn of events for India as Ravindra Jadeja (7*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (21*) were holding.

After winning the Test series 2-0 against Pakistan and heading out of Karachi, the visitors are now aiming to win their first Test match against India.

After an hour of play, India’s top order was completely destroyed by Hasan Mahmud, who dismissed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for six runs each, leaving the home team down 34-3.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the opening batsman, attempted to steady the innings with a 62-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, another left-hander who has played Test cricket since a catastrophic vehicle accident in 2022. Jaiswal made 56 runs. Pant scored 39 runs with six boundaries in an excellent knock. But in the third over after lunch, Hasan ended the partnership when Pant was caught behind by a poor shot.

After reaching his half-century, Jaiswal was finally defeated by Nahid Rana, a young fast bowler from Bangladesh. The issue for India was exacerbated by spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who fell to KL Rahul for 16.

India was immediately placed on the back foot by Hasan’s early 3-14 session, which began with Rohit’s dismissal at second slip. Shubman Gill, who was attempting to play a flip down the leg side, was also caught behind for a duck after just eight deliveries.

Applause erupted as Kohli went onto the field, but it vanished quickly after he edged a length ball from Hasan outside the off-stump, giving wicketkeeper Litton Das an easy catch.

Because he had taken time off to be with his wife for the birth of their second kid, Virat Kohli was somewhat unhappy to be absent as India secured their 4-1 home series triumph over England in March.

India is starting a new Test season with 10 matches scheduled, and they want to maintain their top spot in the World Test Championship rankings.
