Mumbai University Senate Elections Postponed 48 Hours Before Voting, Second Time in 13 Months

Senate elections at Mumbai University are postponed barely two days before the polling. Maharashtra government postponed the exams on Friday until further notice. The elections were originally scheduled to be held on September 13, 2023 but were canceled and rescheduled to September 22, 2024. The elections are cancelled second consecutive time and pending for two years.Mumbai University senate elections are conducted for ten seats representing the university’s registered graduates.The elections were notified on August 3, 2024, under Clause 28(2)(n) of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act of 2016. The government is expected to release a new date shortly."In pursuance of the above election, the concerned voters, candidates, Election Officers, Polling Station Heads, Officers and Staff are hereby informed that as per the order received from the Government of Maharashtra, the Election of the Registered Graduate Constituency to be held on 22nd September 2024 till further order is received from the Government. is being postponed," the official notification reads.The sudden postponement of the senate elections has also sparked a political rage and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray blamed CM Shinde led Maharashtra government. "The gaddar (traitors) gang led by CM Shinde is so scared of elections that they order cancelation of the Mumbai university senate elections a day before the voting. This is a farce and for the world to see what they have done to democracy," he said.
