Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to revolutionise travel in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), one of India’s leading business districts, with the launch of a driverless pod taxi system. The futuristic transportation solution will run on elevated tracks supported by eight-metre-high pillars, allowing seamless traffic flow below. The project, worth Rs 1,016 crore, is expected to be operational by 2027.The pod taxis will operate on an 8.8-kilometre route within BKC, featuring 38 stations. Each fully automated pod will be able to carry up to six passengers, travelling at a maximum speed of 40 kmph. The system aims to improve last-mile connectivity for the 4 lakh to 6 lakh daily commuters in the business district. The pods will run at 15 to 30-second intervals, making them an efficient solution for navigating the narrow roads between BKC and the Bandra and Kurla suburban stations.Sai Green Mobility Private Limited has been chosen to implement and operate the project under a Public-Private Partnership model. The operating agency will manage the system for 30 years, recovering costs through a revenue-sharing model with the MMRDA. The depot for the pod taxi system will be located within BKC.

Fare Structure and Feasibility StudyThe fare for the pod taxis is expected to start at Rs 21 per kilometre, based on surveys of current auto-rickshaw and bus users. This is higher than the current rates for auto-rickshaws and shared autos, but the added convenience of the pod system is expected to attract commuters. A 4% annual fare increase has been proposed to account for inflation and operational costs, as per an Indian Express report.MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee stressed the importance of completing the project within the three-year timeline. If successful, the pod taxi system could be expanded to other areas of Mumbai, offering a futuristic and cost-effective transportation option for the city’s growing population.
