New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin added a five-wicket haul on Sunday to his century in the first innings as India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test to go 1-0 up in the series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Chasing 515 runs to win in the fourth innings captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fought a lone battle with 82 but didn’t get enough support from his teammates as Bangladesh were all out for 234. Ashwin finished with figures of 6/88 while Ravindra Jadeja supported him ably with 3/58 before lunch on Day 4. With the win the Indian team consolidated its lead in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. With seven wins in 10 matches the Rohit Sharma-led side has a PCT of 71.67. Australia is close second with a PCT of 62.50. Bangladesh on the other hand dropped down to the 6th spot. They have a PCT of 39.29. WTC POINTS TABLE....!!! 🇮🇳 - India at the Top Pakistan now have the least points in the standings. pic.twitter.com/awpwHIeVOq — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) August 27 2024 Currently Bangladesh is facing a challenging situation in the World Test Championship. Initially positioned in 4th place they had a promising opportunity to secure a spot in the top 2. However due to a slow over rate they have been penalized with docked points and have now dropped to 6th place placing them in a difficult position. Ashwin was named Man of the Match for his century in the first innings and taking a six-wicket haul in the second. No I dont keep track of POTM awards. Every time I play in Chennai its an amazing feeling. Ive watched a lot of Tests intl cricket in those stands and to do it in front of those renovated stands is great. It was an opportunity to fight and dig in deep. Ive seen so many teammates do it in the past. Was a special inning didnt sink in till day 2. I make a living by bowling so bowling comes first. I think like a bowler naturally but have focused my thoughts on batting. The compartmentalisation is a work in progress Ashwin said during the post-match presentation ceremony.
