Many people have a headache due to stress, while some people have pain only in half of their head. In such a situation, many times people are unable to understand whether it is a normal headache or something else. Migraine I am in pain.
Today in our article, we will learn from Dr. Sonia Lal Gupta, Director – Metro Group of Hospitals, Senior Consultant Neurology, how we can differentiate between migraine and normal headache.
Dr. Sonia Lal said that migraine pain is sharp and intense. It often affects half of the head. Often this pain also affects the neck, shoulders, eyes and ears.
Along with this, one starts having trouble with light and many problems like vomiting and muscle stiffness start occurring.
Talking about normal headache, it can occur in any part of the head. It affects the entire head.
There is no set limit or intensity of this. This clearly means that it can happen as fast as it wants and for as long as it wants.
Dr. Sonia Lal said that migraine and headache are two different types of headaches. Migraine has four stages, the first stage is called the prodromal stage.
This stage starts a few minutes or hours before the pain and in this people feel irritation or something like a migraine pain is about to happen. Many people yawn a lot which is the most common symptom of this.
The next stage is Aura, this occurs in about 30-40% of people, where people can feel symptoms from 5 minutes to one hour before the attack such as tingling in the hands or difficulty in speaking.
Then comes the third stage which we call Headache, where there is a headache or the headache that occurs is mostly on one side, but sometimes it can happen on both sides as well, it feels like something is ringing in the head. Along with this, there is also a feeling of vomiting. If someone is in pain, then he cannot tolerate light and noise. This stage can last up to 72 hours.
The last stage is called postdrome. This headache goes away completely within 24 hours.
Migraine can happen due to different reasons. The most common reasons are stress, less sleep, eating less, skipping meals, drinking less water. Along with this, it is so hot these days that migraine can also happen due to strong sunlight, these are the common causes of migraine, but apart from this there can be some other reasons like pain due to any particular food item like Chinese food or chocolate.
It is very important to identify these triggers. If you get headaches more than four times a month, you should go to a neurologist and consult him. To avoid this, improve your lifestyle, get proper sleep, drink enough water, exercise, meditate and take care of your health.
