On This Day in 2007: India Wins First-Ever T20 World Cup After Beating Pakistan

On this day exactly 17 years ago, India defeated Pakistan in the final to win the first-ever T20 World Cup. The Indian cricket team, captained by MS Dhoni, defeated their fiercest foes in Johannesburg on September 24. At the New Wanderers Stadium, a youthful Indian team led by Dhoni displayed incredible tenacity and talent.

The Men in Blue defeated Pakistan by five runs to win after some tremendous drama that culminated in an exciting finish. Irfan Pathan, an all-rounder from India, won the Player of the Match award after taking three wickets in the pivotal match.

The 2007 Twenty20 World Cup final featured tense moments as India and Pakistan faced off against one other. India won the toss and chose to bat first in the titanic summit match. India scored 157/5 because to a pair of ferocious blows from Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir scored the most for the squad, scoring 75 from 54 balls. In the very competitive game, he struck eight boundaries and two sixes. Rohit, on the other hand, quickly scored 30 off of 16 deliveries. He scored one six and two boundaries.

Misbah-ul-Haq led Pakistan’s response to India’s total and spearheaded their chase. RP Singh stunned Pakistan by taking the first few wickets. Pakistan found themselves reeling at 77/6 by the 12th over as the chase soon bogged down.

Pakistan needed to score 13 runs in the last over to win the trophy, setting up an exciting finish to the contest. It was up to Joginder Sharma to deliver the last over.

Pakistan suddenly found themselves in a strong position, needing six runs from the last four balls. However, Misbah-ul-Haq’s expulsion in an attempted scoop shot gave India the win.

In the match against Pakistan, RP Singh and Irfan Pathan both claimed three wickets to help India win. Joginder Sharma made a contribution, taking two vital wickets.

India finally lifted their second T20 World Cup title in Barbados earlier this year, after a protracted wait. In the T20 World Cup 2024 final, the Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, defeated South Africa by seven runs to claim the championship.
