Brits are set for an Indian summer next month where temperatures rise up to 19C after an Arctic blast.

Weather maps for this week and next show plummeting temperatures with the mercury dropping to freezing in some areas due to cold air moving down from the north. And this coupled with plenty of rain makes for a bleak end to September - but we can expect an upturn in mid-October with temperatures rising again as a low pressure system moves away northwards and the country is more influenced by a high coming from the Continent.

A weather map by Ventusky shows the temperatures for October 10 where much of the country turns an orange colour rather than green with temperatures getting up to 19C in East Anglia and eastern England while in the high teens around much of England. It is set to be 17C in London and Birmingham while 16C in Liverpool and Manchester but in Scotland it will be cooler with Edinburgh 14C and Glasgow 10C.

The Met Office forecast for October 9-23 states that there could be drier spells in between periods of rain and wind during the first part of this period. It reads: A continuation of the rather unsettled pattern in early October is most likely at first, with further spells of rain and strong winds for all regions, but also some drier weather at times.

“The chance of more settled weather increases during the second half the month with longer periods of dry weather developing at times with increasing amounts of fog and frost at night. However, confidence is low and there remains a chance that wetter, more unsettled conditions could continue. Temperatures are most likely to be close to or slightly below normal.”

But before that Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon told The Mirror we can expect temperatures to drop away noticeably this Friday. He said: "Temperatures are going to drop away, as the area of low pressure which will bring the rain into Thursday moves away. That will allow a northwesterly flow to our weather which will bring cooler temperatures. By Friday, much of the UK - pretty much the whole of the UK - will be below average in terms of temperatures.

"You can expect to see the odd frost overnight, particularly under clear skies as we go into the weekend, so there'll be a cool feel to the weather. By late September we're into typical autumn weather - the end of meteorological summer was the end of August, so we're well into autumn now." Overnight temperatures will drop to 7C in the capital on Saturday morning, dropping to 1C in the far north.
