Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati made a big announcement ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections as she revealed the leader chosen to be the Chief Minister in the state if the BSP-INLD alliance forms a government. Addressing a rally in Jind on Wednesday, Mayawati declared that Abhay Singh Chautala has been chosen as the CM candidate. She also said that the government would have two Deputy CMs, one of whom will be from her party.

Indian National Lok Dal leader Abhay Chautala, who was also present at the rally, said that the alliance has decided to provide free electricity to the people of Haryana if voted to power. "If we come to power, we will remove the electricity meters and deliver them to Khattar's house. We will provide free electricity," he said, addressing the people from the stage.

BSP and INLD have reunited for the Haryana Assembly polls. While BSP will contest 37 out of the 90 Assembly seats in the state, INLD will contest the remaining 53.

Abhay Singh Chautala has previously served as the Leader of Opposition in Haryana Legislative Assembly from 2014 to 2019. In the current Haryana Assembly, BSP does not have a legislator. However, INLD has a lone MLA-- Abhay Chautala.

The parties had announced their alliance in July in a press conference following a meeting of the BSP supremo and INLD leader in Lucknow.

The parties had also contested the Lok Sabha elections 2024 together. However, they showcased a poor performance with INLD securing 1.74 per cent vote share and BSP securing just 1.28 per cent. INLD had fielded seven candidates, while BSP had contested nine seats out of the 10 parliamentary segments.

In the previous Assembly elections in the state, Bharatiya Janata Party had emerged as winner, securing 40 seats. Congress had won 30 seats.

Voting for the 90-member assembly in Haryana is set to be held on October 5. The counting of votes will be carried out on October 8 along with that in Jammu and Kashmir.
