The British Academy has decided to send the Hindi film 'Santosh' directed by Sandhya Suri from the United Kingdom (UK) to the Oscars. 'Santosh' will be the official entry from the UK in the International Feature Film category of the Oscars. This is a crime thriller film. It was much talked about when it was screened in the Un-Certain Regard competition at Cannes.
Sandhya Suri is a British-Indian filmmaker. She has written Santosh along with directing it. Shahana Goswami is seen in the lead role in this film. Sandhya has earlier received praise for her documentary 'I for India' released in 2005 and 'Around India with a Movie Camera' released in 2018. Although the film has been sent from the UK, it is Indian. Its story is of a village in North India.
'Santosh' is the name of the lead actress of this film. Santosh gets married and soon after, her husband dies. After this, she gets a job in place of her husband and becomes a police constable. But then a little girl of Vanchit Samad is murdered and then Santosh is included in the investigation of this case. Santosh's character is played by Shahana Goswami. Sunita Panwar is also in the film.

Regarding the reason for making the film, she had said, "For a long time I was looking for a way through which I could talk about violence against women. I was in India. I was working with an NGO and doing research, when I came across a picture." Sandhya had told that this picture was of women protesting during the Nirbhaya gang rape case. After this, she did research on women police officers and from here she got the idea of making a film.
