The administration announced that Evo Morales, the former president of Bolivia who held office from 2006 to 2019, is unable to run for president in 2025 due to a constitutional provision.

According to Deputy Communication Minister Gabriela Alcon on Friday, the ban is a result of the nation’s Constitution rather than a decision taken by the present government.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Alcon asked Morales’ followers to respect Bolivia’s legal system because some had organized demonstrations calling for the acceptance of his candidacy.

Alcon said, “The most important thing is to respect the will of the Bolivian people,” emphasizing that the constitution of the nation was adopted by its people and “must be upheld.”

Following the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ (IACHR) reaffirmation that Bolivia forbids perpetual reelection, she made her statement. In connection with this matter, the IACHR also rejected three human rights complaints brought against the Bolivian government.

Alcon referred to Article 168 of Bolivia’s Constitution, which states that the president may only be re-elected once in a five-year term.

Morales cannot run for office again since he has previously served many terms.

In 2023, the Constitutional Court ruled that limitless re-election “is not a human right,” a view endorsed by the IACHR, which she also mentioned.

Alcon emphasized the value of peaceful negotiation as a means of settling political differences as opposed to potentially unstable demonstrations.

“We don’t have to drive the nation into instability, bloodshed, or warfare. The welfare of the populace must be our first priority, she said.
