How many people die from liver disease every year in India? Shocking revelation in statistics

40 out of 100 liver cancer patients are at risk of serious diseases like obesity, diabetes as well as liver cirrhosis.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 300,000 people die from liver disease every year in India. Which is 3.17% of the total deaths in the country. This accounts for 18.3% of all liver-related deaths globally.

There are many programs to help control liver disease in India

National NAFLD Control Programme: Launched in 2021, this program integrates liver disease control into a comprehensive non-communicable disease control programme.

A federally funded program to prevent and detect hepatitis was launched in 2018. This includes vaccination, blood protection and screening of at-risk populations.

India had the highest number of deaths due to liver diseases in 2017 (about 0.22 million deaths due to cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases).
