Officials said that the Kosi river in Darbhanga and the Bagmati river in Sitamarhi have burst their embankments, making the flood situation worse in numerous areas of Bihar on Monday. Late on Sunday, the Kosi river in Darbhanga flooded and breached its embankment close to the Kartarpur block, submerging the villages of Kirtarpur and Ghanshyampur.

Officials in the Sitamarhi district’s Runni Saidpur block have observed seepage in the Bagmati river embankment.

“New embankment breaches have made the flood situation worse, although it is still under control. Nothing to be alarmed about,” an official said.

According to him, the state’s agencies of disaster management and water resources have been operating on a war posture.

“So far, reports of embankment breaches have come from six different locations around the state. Minister of Water Resources for Bihar Vijay Kumar Choudhary told PTI on Monday that work is ongoing on repairing some of them, while repairs have already been completed on others.

According to another source, high water pressure caused damage to the embankments of the Gandak River in West Champaran and the Bagmati River in Madhkaul village in Sitamarhi, which led to flooding of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve.

“Valmikinagar and Kiratpur in Darbhanga have reported water flowing over the embankments.” However, the water level in a few rivers has recently begun to drop. As of yet, there have been no recorded flood-related deaths in Bihar, according to the ministry.

He stated that six additional teams of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDRF) from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and Ranchi, Jharkhand, are being sent out due to the seriousness of the flood situation in north Bihar.

They are being involved in addition to the 12 NDRF teams and 22 State Disaster Management Authority (SDRF) teams that are already involved in the relief and rescue efforts in the areas impacted by flooding, according to a bulletin released on Monday by the disaster management department.

“Over 16 lakh people were impacted by the flooding, and even though the water levels in a few minor rivers had dropped, the situation remained dire overall. As of right now, no fatalities have been recorded,” said another official.
