Day 5 of the second Test at Green Park Stadium saw a remarkable collapse by Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin, restricting Bangladesh to 146 all out in 47 overs at lunchtime. On a day when India needed early wickets to press for victory.

In the prolonged morning session, eight wickets fell, and the visiting team amassed 120 runs in 36 overs. Consequently, India needed just 95 runs to win the Test and take a 2-0 series lead.

After the morning session resumed at 36/2, Bangladesh took the lead thanks to a calm half-century from Shadman Islam and a determined effort from captain Najmul Shanto to keep the visitors from collapsing.

But poor shot selection combined with astute Indian leadership from Rohit Sharma turned the tide of the match in India’s favor. Mominul Haque was dismissed for two after trying several field placements and bowler changes. Rohit’s tactical skill was evident when Haque attempted a sweep off Ashwin but was caught by KL Rahul at a leg slip.

Though Shanto entered with a lot on his plate, his visit was brief. The skipper of Bangladesh attempted a reverse-sweep against Jadeja, but he was unsuccessful as he failed to catch the ball and left for 19.

Bangladesh continued to attempt to put up a fight when refreshments were called. However, after the break, things started to pour in. In an attempt to play away from his body, set batsman Shadman, who had just reached his fourth fifty in Test cricket, nicked one to Yashasvi Jaiswal at slip. This misplaced shot made matters worse for Bangladesh.

Known for his amazing ability to dissolve alliances, Jadeja struck again right away, forcing Litton Das (1) back to the pavilion. Rishabh Pant was given the ball by Litton after a sudden extra bounce. Within thirty-five minutes, Bangladesh had lost four significant wickets.

Once again, Jadeja was the main tormentor; earlier in the match, he had taken his 300th wicket in the Test, writing his name in history. His two strikes put Bangladesh reeling.

Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to save their innings, but the seasoned hitter ran out of teammates. Bangladesh was reduced to 130/9 when Jasprit Bumrah produced a crisp in-swinger that trapped Taijul Islam in front of the stumps.

Rahim and Khaled Ahmed showed some tenacity, but Bumrah was the one who suffered the most damage from the oncoming yorker, taking out Rahim at 37, who was also Bangladesh’s second-highest run scorer in the second innings.

Ashwin (3/50), Jadeja (3/34) and Bumrah (3/17) each took nine wickets for India, while Akash Deep claimed only one wicket.

Summary: India 285/9 decl. (Yashasvi Jaiswal 72, KL Rahul 68; Mehidy Hasan 4-41, Shakib Al Hasan 4-78) trail Bangladesh 233 & 146 all out (Shadman Islam 50, Mushfiqur Rahim 37; Jasprit Bumrah 3-17, Ravindra Jadeja 3-34) by 94 runs.
