Oral Cancer: A device to detect oral cancer in its early stages will soon be available in the market. Through this, oral cancer can be detected and treated in its early stages.

IIT Kanpur Develops Mouth oral cancer detection device: Mouth cancer has become a major concern all over the world including India, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 177,757 people lost their lives in the year 2020. It is the 13th most common cancer at the global level. Its outbreak is high in India because a large number of people here eat things like gutkha and pan masala and invite mouth cancer. If this type of cancer is detected on time, the damage to health can be reduced.

'Mouth tester' will do wonders

IIT Kanpur has developed a device that can help detect mouth cancer in its early stages. It is expected that this device will be available in the market by December 2024. IIT has transferred this technique to a company which will make it in the shape of a brush and launch it in the market. It has been named 'Munh Parikshak'.

This is a portable device designed by Professor Jayant Kumar Singh, who is a senior scientist in the Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Kanpur. IIT has tested this device on about 3 thousand people of Kanpur city, including school people, hospital employees and factory workers.

According to Professor Jayant Kumar Singh, if oral cancer is detected in the first stage, then it is possible to prevent this disease to a great extent. There are many people in India who get to know about this cancer in the second or third stage, by then it is too late and treatment becomes difficult. In such a situation, this brush-shaped device can prove to be a milestone.

How does this device work?

Professor Jayant also told that this is a normal device in which white and fluorescent light source is used, it can be connected wirelessly to gadgets like smartphones, tablets, iPads. It has power backup, as well as tracking and data history is also stored. In clinical settings, this device can give up to 90 percent accuracy. It is safe to use and does not require any chemical process. This brush-like device can tell the difference between cancer tissue and normal tissue. Through this, cheeks, tongue and palate on both sides are tested.

How much will it cost?

Although the price of this device has not been decided yet, it is expected that its price will be kept between one to two lakh rupees. Since it has many such devices which have to be imported from abroad. The good thing is that 5 lakh patients can be tested with a single brush device, which makes it overall affordable.
