Mumbai: Shardiya Navratri 2024 marks a nine-day celebration dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga’s nine forms, known as Navadurga. It is being celebrated from October 3 and will end on October 12,  Each day of the festival honours a different manifestation of the Goddess, starting with Maa Shailputri on the first day and concluding with Maa Siddhidatri on the ninth day.

The festival culminates with Vijayadashami, or Dussehra, on October 12, symbolising the victory of good over evil, as exemplified by Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana.

Throughout India, Navratri is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm. Homes and temples are adorned beautifully, with devotees observing fasts, offering special prayers, and engaging in spiritual rituals.

In states like Gujarat, Garba and Dandiya Raas dances are key cultural attractions. This festival highlights the triumph of divine feminine energy over negative forces, making it a spiritually significant event.

On the second day of Shardiya Navratri, devotees worship Maa Brahmacharini, the second form of Adi Shakti. Maa Brahmacharini represents the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati, born to Daksha Prajapati. Known for her intense penance, she presides over Lord Mangal, the deity of fortune.

In this form, she is depicted walking barefoot, holding a Jap Mala in her right hand and a Kamandal in her left. According to Hindu scriptures, she undertook severe penance to win the love of Lord Shiva, living on Bael leaves, flowers, and fruits for years, eventually fasting without any food or water. Her perseverance earned her Lord Brahma’s blessing, leading her to become Shiva’s consort. However, after her father insulted Shiva, she immolated herself, vowing to be born to a father who would respect her husband in her next life.

Worshipping Maa Brahmacharini is believed to foster virtues such as penance, renunciation, and restraint, while also promoting ethical conduct. Devotees also believe that praying to her helps them achieve their personal and spiritual goals.
