Bangladesh: The main adviser to Bangladesh’s interim administration, Muhammad Yunus, met with Alex Soros, the son of US billionaire philanthropist George Soros, on Wednesday.
Alex called Yunus an “old friend of my father” at the meeting and commended him for leading Bangladesh toward a future based on “equity and fairness.” “Delighted to see an old friend of my father and the foundation, Nobel Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus, interim leader of Bangladesh, who stepped in to lead Bangladesh towards a peaceful future based on equity and fairness,” he said on Instagram to express his feelings.
This meeting takes place after Sheikh Hasina, the previous prime minister of Bangladesh, was removed. The longstanding Awami League leader was removed earlier this year as a result of student demonstrations that spread widely and developed into a significant anti-government movement.
On August 8, when Hasina left the nation and the parliament was dissolved, Yunus took the oath of office as leader of the provisional administration. Hasina allegedly claimed that the US was involved in the demonstrations during a period of political unrest in the nation, asserting that she could have kept her position of authority if she had given the US sovereignty over Saint Martin Island. But US authorities brushed these accusations off, calling them “laughable” and “absolutely false.”
In a recent speech to the UN General Assembly, Yunus praised the youth-led demonstrations that resulted in Hasina’s overthrow and denounced her “autocratic” and “undemocratic” government. He conveyed optimism that the people of Bangladesh will come together and create a brighter future for their country. During his speech, protesters outside the UN Headquarters voiced their strong opposition to Yunus’s leadership, despite his appeals for improvement.
