Although there is no concrete treatment for this disease, it can be controlled with lifestyle changes and medicines. But recently Chinese scientists have claimed to cure Type 1 diabetes patients through stem cell transplant. The incident is being considered a major milestone in medical science, and is said to be the first case of its kind in the world. This discovery has been made by a team of researchers from 'Tianjin First Central Hospital' and 'Peking University'. The results of this study were published in the journal 'Cell' last week.

What is Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin completely. Due to which the glucose level in the blood starts increasing.

25 year old girl becomes diabetes free

According to Chinese newspaper 'The Paper', the 25-year-old woman was suffering from Type 1 diabetes for more than a decade. She has completely recovered from the disease about 2.5 months after the cell transplant.

What is stem cell transplant?

In stem cell transplant, damaged insulin-producing pancreatic cells are replaced with cells from a healthy person. Earlier, a donor was required for this, which was the biggest drawback of this therapy. But now this process has become easier. Now chemically induced pluripotent stem cells derived from islets are used for transplant. The special thing is that it takes only half an hour.

Beneficial in these diseases also

Stem cell transplants can treat not only type 1 diabetes but also some types of cancer. It may also prove beneficial for many types of autoimmune diseases in the future.
