The injury was disclosed by the club on Thursday after receipt of the MRI findings.

The injury happened on Wednesday during the Pelicans’ second session of their training camp in Nashville. Murphy is unlikely to participate in New Orleans’ regular season opener against Chicago on October 23 due to his recuperation timeframe.

The 24-year-old Murphy, a Virginia product and first-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, averaged a career-high 14.8 points in 57 games with 23 starts last season.

Throughout his three seasons, he has shot 39.2% from three-point range. He has also shown a talent for cutting to the basket for the type of towering, commanding dunks that have earned him an invitation to the NBA All-Star weekend dunk competition in the past.

Murphy is about to begin the last season of his rookie contract when he suffers an injury. He may have his contract extended to October 21st. If not, he’d be expected to sign as a restricted free agent the following summer.
