Do you know maintaining a clean room offers various mental health benefits?

Tidying up and cleaning the house helps one get proper sleep, as has been proven in a study conducted in the year 2018.

Often, people who are always in a rush, generally have a cluttered room, while those who are calm and composed in most situations have a clean and tidy room or workstation. Hence, it is true that a messy room reflects chaos and clutter in one’s personal life as well.

There are numerous ways by which a clean room helps to improve one’s mental health.

  • A clean room improves the sleep quality of a person. Keeping the room organised and cleaning it can help in getting perfect sleep. According to a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research in 2018, cluttered rooms can affect one’s sleep quality and duration.

  • Arranging and cleaning a room can help one to have better focus, according to a study published in the Harvard Business Review in 2020. Cleaning the room can result in mental clarity and focus as it removes distractions, increases dopamine, helps in better decision-making, and helps to be more focused.

  • Arranging one’s room and space also helps in improving one’s mood as it helps to activate the brain’s default mode, which enhances relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety. This has been proved in a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology in 2018.

  • Arranging cluttered spaces gives one a sense of control. There are many times when a person cannot control the situation around him/her, but cleaning and arranging a person’s home gives one a sense of control and power. According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review in 2020, organizing reduces the feeling of overwhelm and increases one’s sense of control. For some people, cleaning can feel therapeutic and can be as beneficial as using a mindfulness app.

While many people put off cleaning as it seems way too big to tackle, instead of expecting to get the entire house clean, one can start small and do just a little bit of cleaning each day.
