Travel in third AC coach on sleeper coach reservation

Let's try to know about this special facility of Indian Railways, why only a few people get this facility? What is the purpose of this special scheme? How does this service scheme work? What are the rules related to it? Also, if we want, how can we take advantage of this facility. With the help of which measures or Jugaad at the time of ticket booking (Train Ticket Booking Online), we can enjoy the journey with more luxury in third AC coach at the cost of sleeper coach reservation.

Indian Railways started Auto Upgradation Scheme

Indian Railways had launched this Auto Upgradation Scheme for its benefit after a lot of thought so that no seat remains vacant in the train. Actually, many times berths used to remain vacant in upper class coaches like AC-One, Two or Three of many trains. Due to this, the railways had to suffer huge losses. To avoid this loss and to make the passengers aware of the facilities of upper class coaches, the railways had started this auto upgradation (IRCTC Auto Upgradation Rules).

Upgrading a passenger from one class below and giving him a berth in upper class

Under this auto upgradation scheme of the railways, if a berth in the upper class is left vacant, then the passenger from one class below him is upgraded and given a berth in that class. For example, if four seats are vacant in the AC first bogie of a train and two seats are vacant in AC second, then the tickets of some passengers of second AC will be upgraded and they will be put in first AC. Also, the passengers of third AC will be upgraded and given seats in second AC.

Both the railways and the passengers benefit from the auto upgradation scheme

With this exercise of the railways, some of the seats that are vacant in third AC will be given to the passengers on the waiting list. If more seats are vacant, then the sleeper class passenger will be given a berth in third AC. In this way, no berth of any reserved coach of the train will remain vacant. Railways' loss will be reduced and passengers will also benefit. However, to take advantage of this facility, the passenger has to be careful while booking the ticket.

Use this special Jugaad while booking the ticket

While booking the ticket from IRCTC's site or app, one is asked to choose the option for auto upgradation. In this, the option of yes or no has to be chosen. The passenger who ticks the yes option is given priority under the ticket auto upgradation scheme. The one who chooses no is not disturbed. However, if the passenger does not select any option from yes or no at the time of booking, then the system automatically considers it as yes.

What are the rules of PNR, cancellation or refund?

Finally, it is very important to know that under the auto upgradation scheme, there is no change in PNR despite changing the class of the bogie. This means that the same PNR has to be used for any kind of information related to the travel ticket. Apart from this, if the ticket is cancelled after it has been upgraded, then as per the rules, the old price is refunded and not the upgraded class.
