The 3 T20 match series between India and Bangladesh is starting from Sunday 5th October and with this, Team India's new T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav will return. In the first series of Surya, who became the Indian captain in July itself, Team India defeated Sri Lanka 3-0. Now for the first time, he will lead Team India as a regular captain on Indian soil, but even before this series, discussions have started about Surya's captaincy. He has got this responsibility in place of Hardik Pandya, who was captaining the team till last year and was also the vice-captain in the T20 World Cup. Since then, discussions have started whether Surya can also become the captain of Mumbai Indians in the next IPL season. Just before the series against Bangladesh, Surya gave his answer on the possibilities of captaincy in IPL.
In the press conference a day before the match in Gwalior, Suryakumar Yadav was asked about his experience of captaining Team India and also about his desire to captain any team in IPL. Apparently the captain of Team India did not give any direct answer but through one of his answers he indicated that he is ready to fulfill this responsibility in IPL also. According to PTI report, Surya said that he is enjoying this role. Then Surya mentioned Mumbai Indians and said that when Rohit Sharma was the captain of the franchise, if he felt anything, he used to suggest it to the captain.
What Surya said after this was only 2-3 words but it also indicated that he has received or may receive the offer of captaincy. Surya just said- 'Let's see the rest.' Now this has raised questions whether after Team India, there is no preparation for change in captaincy in Mumbai Indians too? Last season itself, the franchise surprised Hardik Pandya by making him the captain. There was a lot of uproar when Rohit was removed from the captaincy and the fans also did not like it. Mumbai team stood last in the season. However, under the captaincy of Rohit, India won the T20 World Cup and then after Rohit's retirement, Surya got the captaincy of the T20 team in place of Hardik, who before that was playing the role of Hardik's vice-captain.
However, there has been speculation about Surya's contact not only with Mumbai Indians but also with some other franchises. It has even been claimed that despite Kolkata winning the IPL 2024 title, Shreyas Iyer can be traded to Mumbai and Surya can be brought to the franchise and made the captain. Apart from this, there have also been reports of contact with Lucknow Super Giants, who are looking for a new captain in place of KL Rahul. In such a situation, everyone's eyes are on whether Surya will become the captain of Mumbai or will he move to another franchise? The answer to the second question can be found by the end of October because only by then all the franchises have to announce their retention.
