“He told me not to…”: Mayank Yadav talks about what coach Gautam Gambhir told him before India’s first game

India beat Bangladesh by 7 runs in Gwalior on Sunday, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Mayank Yadav had a good T20 start. The Delhi bowler came back to play right away after getting hurt in the IPL. He bowled with a lot of speed and got good numbers to start his international career.

In his first T20 match, Yadav tied Ajit Agarkar’s 18-year-old mark and became only the second Indian bowler to do so. Earlier this year, his raw speed made him a standout bowler in the IPL. He used the same strategy in his first game for India, but he did it smartly. To get his first international wicket, Yadav didn’t focus on speed. Instead, he kept his eye on the right line and length.

Yadav said on Jio Cinema after India’s easy win that he was scared for his start because he hadn’t played competitive cricket since getting hurt in the IPL.

“Indeed, I was thrilled, but also a little scared.” After getting hurt, this series was my comeback. I didn’t play professional cricket before making my start. “That’s why I felt a little more tense,” Yadav told Jio Cinema.

“The time of recovery was hard for more.” In the past four months, there have been a lot of ups and downs. “But the people who worked with me had it worse than I did,” he said.

Yadav didn’t go faster than 150 kmph. His fastest speed was 149.9 kph, and he also bowled as slowly as 135 kph. The fast bowler with the right arm said that the ground wasn’t helping much, so he changed the speed of his ball.

“I paid more attention to my body today.” I also didn’t want to bowl faster; I was determined to hit the right lengths. My speed wasn’t on my mind. I just tried to leak as few runs as possible and bowl at the right line and length.

“I bowled some slower balls in the IPL too, but not a lot.” I talked to my captain, and he told me to use my stalk ball more instead of trying different ones. “But when I got to Gwalior, the wicket didn’t have much bounce, so I sped up to match the conditions,” he said.

About what head coach Gautam Gambhir told him, Yadav said that he was told to stick to the basics and not try anything new.

“He [Gautam Gambhir] told me to stick to the basics and do the things that have worked for me in the past. Nothing else.” He told me not to think too much about trying new things or even the fact that it was a game between countries. “The key was to follow the process,” Yadav said.
