Actress Zubaida Begum daughter of Qasembhai Mehta a Bohra Muslim businessman and Faiza Bai a singer in Bombay made a name for herself in the industry. However besides her fame Zubaida Begum was known for her infamous history with Maharaja Hanwant Singh. While many speculate that their deaths were part of a pre-planned strategy others believe it was a mere accident. In 2001 Zubaidas son Khalid Mohammed wrote a film about his mother exploring his death and various aspects of it. To this day the mystery surrounding their deaths lingers within the walls of Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Some believe her spirit continues to haunt the royal family with claims of sensing her presence even today. Zubaidas father never wanted her to become an actress. He made all decisions on her behalf including arranging her marriage and later her divorce. Despite having a strict family and an orthodox father Zubaida Begum enjoyed spending quality time with her aunts. When Zubaida attended a royal wedding her grace and elegance deeply impressed Maharaja Hanwant Singh. Soon their romance began to blossom. Although the actress returned to Mumbai her love and affection for the Maharaja led him to track her down and he went on his knees with a marriage proposal. Although her mother initially objected she eventually agreed on the condition that Zubaidas son would live with them. Zubaida relocated to Jodhpur converted to Hinduism and married the Maharaja in December 1950. Despite this she was never fully accepted by the royal family. The Fateful Day of the Plane Crash On January 26 1952 a tragic plane crash occurred claiming the lives of the actress and the Maharaja. After the news broke many speculated it was a pre-planned attack. In 2001 Zubaidas son Khalid Mohammed created a film depicting Zubaida’s life story and the deep love Maharaja had for her. In a spooky twist some residents of Jodhpur believe that Zubaida Begums spirit still haunts the Umaid Bhawan Palace. After the couple died Zubaida and Maharajas son Rao Raja Hukum Singh aka Tutu was raised by the Rajmata of Jodhpur. Just like his parents he also had a rough fate. On April 17 1981 Tutu was found beheaded on the streets of Jodhpur.
