Greek news outlets said that George Baldock, who played for Panathinaikos and for Greece, was found dead in his swimming pool on Wednesday.

The English-born right back, who was 31 years old, died at home in the southern Athens town of Glyfada, according to the state news service ANA.

The Super League of Greece and a number of teams sent their respects.

A bottle of booze was found at the spot, according to state TV ERT, where the player was found.

ANA said that Baldock’s wife, who is traveling, told the owner of the house after trying to call the player but not being able to.

A coroner was called to look at the body, and police cars and an ambulance were outside the house, ERT said.

Baldock quit Sheffield United after seven years to play for Panathinaikos in May. United was dropped from the English Premier League to the Championship last season.

He was called up to the Greek national team in 2022 because his father is Greek.

He had 12 caps, but ERT said he wasn’t picked for the team’s Nations League game against England at Wembley on Thursday because he was hurt.

In a Greek Super League game on Sunday, Baldock played for Panathinaikos in a 0-0 draw with Olympiacos. He played for 75 minutes.

In honor of the player, the Greece team’s official website and his club’s social media pages on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook were all turned black.

Harry Maguire, an English defender for Manchester United who used to play for Sheffield United, shared a picture of Baldock on Instagram with the words “RIP” and a sadness emoji next to it.

Sheffield United put a black-and-white picture of a past player on their home page and wrote, “RIP George Baldock.”

The club said, “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and very saddened to learn of the death of former player George Baldock.”

“George played five times in 2011 before going on to play for Oxford United and Sheffield United.” We’re deeply sorry for George’s family and friends’ loss.
