Industry player Kumar is also known for his comedy. He has done many such films in which his excellent comic timing forced people to laugh heartily. Akshay's wry smile and mischievous eyes entertained people a lot. One such film of his was 'Welcome' which came in the year 2007. Even though the film 'Welcome' is today seen as a cult classic in comedy movies, when this film was released, initially it did not get the same response from people that it gets today. Because of this the director had to go to the hospital.
'Welcome' is such a classic film that you can also consider it a great rom-com. Every character of this film is seen like a legend in today's times and the dialogues are such that they are full-on meme content, but the year 2007 was a different time when this film was released on the big screen. In the same year that Welcome came, Akshay and Vidya's two blockbuster films 'Hey Baby' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa' were also released.
Along with Welcome, Bollywood's King Khan Shahrukh Khan and famous director Farah Khan's big budget film Om Shanti Om also entered the cinema halls. People were already crazy about Shahrukh due to which Welcome could not get the opening it should have got.
Anees Bazmee, director of the film 'Welcome', had talked about this in an interview given to Hindustan Times. Bazmee, director of films like 'No Entry' and 'Singh Is King', said that Welcome did not initially get the response he wanted. Talking about the positive and negative reactions towards his work, he said that many of his popular films had a bad start. People did not see him the way they wanted. He said that when I showed some of the films made by me in full to the people, people reacted saying, My God, this is a very terrible film.
Anees further said that when I made Welcome, the only complaint people had was that it was not a comedy. I told him that this is what I have made and now I cannot go to the theater and tickle people to make them laugh. This is the only comedy I know how to make. I can't add tamasha, double meaning jokes and such shortcuts in it. I don't believe in such things. Bazmee further said that I felt so stressed that I had to be admitted to the hospital. Talking about the film, Welcome had a big star cast which included big stars like Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Sanjay Mishra and Firoz Khan.
