The central government has ruled in favor of Elon Musk in the spectrum allocation case despite pressure from Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal. This decision signals that the government will not bow to external pressures and will make decisions that benefit the general public. The dispute centers around satellite spectrum allocation. Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday rejected service providers demand to auction satcom spectrum but made it clear that radiowaves will come with a cost even if assigned without auction for satellite-based communications services. Setback For Mukesh Ambani & Sunil Bharti Mittal  Earlier in the day Bharti Airtel founder and chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal joined rival firm Reliance Jio in demanding allocation of spectrum for satcom services in the same manner as it is allocated to telecom players. Companies like Elon Musks and Amazon want the satellite spectrum allocation process in India to follow a global procedure under government supervision. In contrast domestic telecom operators like Jio and Airtel advocate for the traditional auction-based process for satellite spectrum allocation. However the government has sided with Elon Musk’s approach. Government Rejected Jio and Airtel’s Proposal Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has clarified that satellite spectrum will be allocated through an administrative process. This decision is a significant setback for industry giants Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal both of whom had written to the government opposing this move. Sunil Bharti Mittal owner of Airtel also raised the issue in front of Prime Minister Modi at the India Mobile Congress event. Elon Musk Vs Mukesh Ambani & Sunil Mittal The worlds richest person Elon Musk has taken on Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal over the allocation of spectrum used in wireless communication using satellites calling their demand for the auction of such airwaves unprecedented. While Ambanis Reliance Jio has been vocal about the need to allocate such spectrum through an auction to give a level playing field to legacy operators who buy airwaves and set up infrastructure like telecom towers Mittal on Tuesday articulated the need to use bidding for such allocation. Musk-led Starlink is demanding administrative allotment of licences in line with the global trend as it looks to tap into the worlds fastest-growing mobile telephony and internet market. This has found some backing in Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia who said such airwaves will be given out through administrative allocation and not auctioned. (With Inputs From PTI)
