Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman made it plain to staff members who disagreed with the company’s move to a five-day work-from-office policy that they needed to “change or look for a new job.” Garman emphasized in-person collaboration as a critical component of AWS’s future innovation and success at a company-wide meeting.

Although many workers support the idea, they should be aware that those who disagree with it will be clearly informed that they are not welcome. This is consistent with other statements made by Amazon executives, such as Andy Jassy, who advised disgruntled workers to look for alternative employment opportunities.

In his comments, he underlined the importance of teamwork in an office environment for AWS’s success, particularly when it comes to the creation of novel and inventive products: “I have not seen an ability for us to do that when we’re not in-person.”

Numerous employees have protested the decision, bringing up issues with lengthier commutes and the lack of freedom that came with working remotely. Opponents point out that there is little evidence to support the idea that more office work increases productivity when compared to remote work. AWS has steadfastly stuck to its decision, however, and is taking this course of action.

Garman said in a very professional way that those who weren’t into it could just go and look for other professions where they would feel more at ease. His advice struck a chord with Andy Jassy, who informed the staff that they would be considered to have “voluntarily resigned” if they failed to show up for work at the office.

The approach has generated conflict among part-time remote workers, while having advocates among AWS employees. A number of people have complained that the new return-to-the-office policy prevented them from accessing business IT systems.
