A woman has taken to Reddit after finding out her engagement ring wasn’t quite what she thought.
Though, initially, she thought the ring was beautiful, red flags began to fly when questions around specific details were continually dodged.
Ultimately, she found out that the ring was purchased for $38 for Temu. But, does it really matter?
“I asked where he got [the ring] and he wouldn’t tell me where, but that he got a great deal on it,” the woman shared.
“I didn’t think anything of it until yesterday. We were in bed and I asked him if it was diamond or moissanite, mainly out of curiosity… He said he didn’t know and would have to look it up. When I glanced over at his phone, he was in the Temu app. I asked him if he got it from there and he didn’t respond. So I asked again and he responded with something like ‘does it matter?’ and left the room and ended up sleeping on the couch.”
According to the post, the woman’s fiance earns a salary of around $200k a year, leading her to believe the price wasn’t to do with him being frugal by necessity.
“I have people messaging me that the ring could be harmful to my health and that Temu has horrible standards for their jewelry and labor issues so now I really don’t want to wear it,” she added in an update.
In the latest addition to the post, the woman stated that after a host of conversations around the ring, her fiance suggested she pick out a new ring herself, and buy it with her own money.
The majority of commenters on the post agreed with the woman, expressing greater concern over the quality and thought behind the ring, rather than the price.
“Normally I’d celebrate someone who didn’t buy into all the engagement/wedding spend-yourself-to-bankruptcy thing, but $38??” one commenter said.
“I’m as tight as a duck’s arse with money, as we say in the UK, but I’d spend a little more than that to at least get a band that was a reasonably high-carat gold, and then save on the gemstones.”
“A Ring Pop is more romantic than a ring from Temu,” said another.
Others urged the woman to consider whether she should be staying with him altogether.
“This will be your future if you marry him,” one said.
“He’s showing you exactly who he is. He’s cheap and now expects you to buy your own ring.”
