West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urges junior doctors to withdraw fast unto death

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday made an appeal to the junior doctors, who are protesting, over phone to withdraw fast unto-death agitation.

Chief Secretary Manoj Pant visited the protest site to meet the protesters today afternoon and the Chief Minister spoke to the junior doctors through Pant's mobile phone. This development comes a day after the West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front, the umbrella organization spearheading the movement, announced that all doctors will go on strike from Tuesday if their demands are not met and issues are not resolved by Monday.

Banerjee spoke for at least one hour over mobile phone to the junior doctors, including those on hunger strike, in the presence of Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, to resolve the impasse. The junior doctors have been invited by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a meeting to resolve the impasse over fast-unto-death.

On Saturday afternoon, Pant was also accompanied by the state home secretary Nandini Chakraborty and the deputy commissioner (central division) of Kolkata Police Indira Mukherjee visited dais, where seven junior doctors at Esplanade in central Kolkata for the last 15 days.

The Chief Minister said the common people feel helpless if they do not get medical services at the state-run hospitals. “I am in favor of humanity. I also want justice. But at the same time the treatment of the common people will have to be ensured. So I am again requesting you to withdraw the hunger-strike and get back to work,” the Chief Minister said.

"This wrong message must not go to the common people. We the junior doctors are working. After our work, we are coming to the protest. The Chief Minister promised that she will ensure that the examinations in medical colleges will be done in a stringent manner and she will end corruption," a junior doctor said after discussion.

During the interaction over phone, the Chief Minister, however, said that she did not agree to removal of the state Principal Health Secretary. “Already we have removed the Kolkata Police Commissioner and some other officials,” the Chief Minister pointed out. Banerjee also assured that she will take action against corruption.

The Chief Minister agreed to meet the WBJDF in a meeting on Monday evening at Nabanna, the state secretariat. "We will organize the meeting on Monday. Follow up action will be taken and we will invite them for a meeting. We have requested them again. We are concerned about their health. We want them to withdraw their hunger strike today and the CM has also requested them," Pant said after the meeting.
