Karwa Chauth is all set to be celebrated on Sunday, October 20, 2024. This festival holds special significance for married women across the country and is predominantly celebrated in North India. On this day, women observe a day-long fast, during which they neither eat nor drink, praying for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. They fast from sunrise until moonrise, and to break the fast, women cite the Moon and offer water from an earthen pot known as a ‘Karwa.’ On this auspicious occasion, married women adorn themselves in the evening, eagerly awaiting the moonrise to conclude their fast.
Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 20, 2024. According to the Drik Panchang, the Chaturthi Tithi starts at 6:46 AM and concludes at 4:16 AM on October 21. The auspicious time for the Karwa Chauth Puja is between 5:46 PM and 7:02 PM, lasting for one hour and 16 minutes. Women will begin their fast at 6:25 AM, which will end with the moonrise at 7:54 PM.
The festival is steeped in folklore, centring around the tale of Queen Veeravati. On her Karwa Chauth, she fainted and broke her fast early due to starvation. Later, she learned that her husband had passed away. Upon discovering her husband’s demise, Queen Veeravati prayed to Goddess Parvati, who granted her the strength to fast again. As a result of her devotion, her husband’s life was restored. Today, the fast emphasizes the strength of love and faith.
Karwa Chauth is a special day for married women in India. Before sunrise, women consume a special meal called “sargi,” prepared by their mother-in-law, to give them energy for the long day ahead. To break the fast, women first see their husbands’ face through a sieve and then gaze at the Moon. They conclude the fast by sipping water.
Karwa Chauth is celebrated in various ways. Some couples celebrate together, even if they are not married, and some men fast alongside their wives to show their love and support. It is a day filled with joy, laughter, and beautiful decorations.
