New Delhi: New Zealand faced Jasprit Bumrahs dangerous spell and foiled Indias attempts to create a miracle on the last day. By winning the first Test by eight wickets New Zealand tasted success in the traditional format on Indian soil after 36 years. The last time New Zealand defeated India was in 1988 at the Wankhede Stadium by 136 runs under the captaincy of John Wright. Chasing the target of 107 runs to win New Zealand did not show any laxity after the initial setbacks. For New Zealand Will Young remained unbeaten on 48 runs and Rachin Ravindra remained unbeaten on 39 runs. Both of them made an unbroken partnership of 75 runs for the third wicket and gave the team a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The way India made a comeback in the match despite being all out for 46 runs in the first innings is commendable. Now it will have to forget this defeat and show its natural game in the second Test starting on October 24 in Pune. It was a good effort with the bat in the second innings. We didnt bat well in the first innings. So we knew what lied ahead. A couple of guys stood out. When you are 350 runs behind. You cant think too much about it. You have to play the ball. It was a great effort. Something we as a team are very proud of reflects Rohit Sharma. We knew it was going to be challenging with overcast conditions and pitch being a bit sticky. But I did not expect that we will be bowled out for under 50. Credit to New Zealand. They challenged every corner of our bat. We have the guys who know how to bounce back. We lost the first Test against England and then won the series he added. After recovering from a sore throat Shubman Gills return in the second Test seems certain but Sarfaraz Khan who scored 150 runs in the second innings of the first Test cannot be ignored now. India will also have to see whether to field three fast bowlers or three spinners. This decision did not prove to be effective at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The match started one hour late at 10:15 am due to wet outfield on the last day. Handling the new ball Bumrah took two wickets for 29 runs. Tom Latham was out in the first over without opening his account. The umpire gave him out LBW on which he took a review. His dismissal was also confirmed in DRS. India must have felt the lack of a third fast bowler because the wicket was helping Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj. India had fielded Kuldeep Yadav as the third spinner who gave 26 runs in three overs. Devon Conway also looked uncomfortable against Bumrah and was out LBW after scoring 17 runs. New Zealands score was 35 runs for two wickets at that time but Young and Ravindra played cautiously after that. There was no problem in batting after the sky became bright and both of them tackled the loose balls. Ravindra who scored a century in the first innings also hit a six to Kuldeep.
