The clip features a group of students performing a routine to the song 'Munni Badnaam' on stage, which has drawn mixed reactions.

While some viewers found the performance “vulgar” and argued that it was inappropriate for a scholarly setting, others disagreed. According to the ‘IIT Bombay Uncuts’ YouTube channel, this dance was performed by residents of Hostel 5 at IIT Bombay, a leading institution in the fields of engineering and technology.

The footage, widely shared on X, shows a student dressed in a crop top and skirt dancing to “Munni Badnaam,” with other students joining in, much to the audience's delight. The video has gone viral, amassing 1.2 million views and sparking an online conversation about whether the performance crosses the line of decency in an academic environment.

The Critics

Critics were quick to voice their concerns. “Cheap…doesn’t look like educated people,” remarked an X user named Pihu. Another user chimed in, “I don’t blame them. From shows like Kapil Sharma to Bollywood movies and award ceremonies, these kids have been raised watching suggestive dances like this on TV. It’s embedded in them—blame the media and their upbringing.”

One person added, “Before criticizing them, point fingers at Bollywood, the entertainment industry, and social media influencers. Everything is interconnected. This performance is just a symptom of a broader issue.” Another commenter, Shawmava Mukherjee, noted, “The song objectifies women. If you think this is acceptable in an educational setting, you’ve been conditioned.”

The Supporters

On the other hand, many defended the students, emphasizing their hard work in gaining admission to such a prestigious institute and their right to enjoy their college life. “Those who can't get into top institutions shouldn’t judge these talented students,” one user commented.

“I don’t see anything vulgar,” another user noted. “If this is considered indecent, why not protest outside Mumbai film studios?” a third person added.

One user remarked, “The person calling this vulgar clearly doesn’t know what goes on at IIT Bombay. This doesn’t even come close to being among the top controversial things.”
