On the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, people observe the Ahoi Ashtami fast. Mothers celebrate the Ahoi Mata fast on this day in hopes that their children may live long lives and be happy and prosperous. This fast, which is performed without water (Nirjala) and broken only after midnight by sacrificing water (Arghya) to the stars, is regarded as one of the most challenging fasts. Ahoi Ashtami falls in October this year.
