Rivals has left subscribers hot and bothered, with many curious to know if the story is at all based on real life.

Headlined by David Tennant and Alex Hassell, it promises a whirlwind of high-flying shenanigans and sizzling storylines, right from the opening gambit of an ex-Olympian MP's high-altitude antics.

And now, with all eight episodes ready to watch in one, many have grown curious about what really inspired the 1980s-set drama.

Is Rivals on Disney+ based on a true story?

While Rivals is filled to the brim with larger than life characters and scandalous plots, it isn't based on real life.

The story actually comes from author Jilly Coopers 1980s hit book of the same name, the second in her Rutshire Chronicles series.

However, it has been said that the charming Rupert Campbell-Black was inspired by a number of high profile members of the elite, such as Queen Camilla's former spouse Andrew Parker Bowles, the late 21st Earl of Suffolk, "Mickey" Suffolk, and David Somerset, Duke of Beaufort.

It is believed that the esteemed tailor and fashion designer Rupert Lycett Green was another who helped shape the lead character.

Speaking to The Telegraph back in 2002, she reflected: "They were a wildly dashing and exciting group.

"Their bravery and charisma were the essential elements of Rupert's character.

However, she clarified her statement adding: "This was because of their charm and glamour, not for any of Rupert's naughty behaviour!

The inclusion of Campbell-Black in the novel Rivals was not always certain, Cooper shared.

Rupert Campbell-Black is a prominent figure in sevearl of her books, including 'Riders,' 'Polo,' and 'The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous'.

But there was a moment when she considered omitting the infamous rogue from this particular book.

The author, now 87, disclosed to MailOnline: "Originally, I intended to leave out Rupert, my hellraising hero, because in Riders he was cruel both to women and his horses. But I missed his glamour and humour."

Rivals is available to watch on Disney+.
