Late Queen's heartbreaking conversation with her children in the days leading up to her death

In , Robert Hardman wrote that the monarch was "endearingly reluctant to cause unnecessary inconvenience to others" and was worried about logistics should she see out her final moments at rather than in London. Her daughter later shared her mother's concerns in the documentary, Charles III: The Coronation Year. She revealed that the Queen felt it would be "more difficult" if she died at Balmoral, and was troubled about causing issues for others, even at the end of her life.

"We did try and persuade her that that that shouldn't be part of the decision-making process," Anne recalled. "I hope she felt that that was right in the end, because I think we did." A close friend of the family further told Hardman the late Queen had been suffering from "multiple conditions" in her final year. "She had come to realise that the medical prognosis meant she was not going to emulate and reach 100, so she had been determined to make the most of that [final] year," they said. "She made sure she had all up over the summer, so that the young ones in particular would always be left with ."

The Queen was at Balmoral when she passed away at 3:10 on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96. Of her family members, only Charles, and Anne were able to spend time with her before her death. By chance, the siblings were both in at the time of their mother's sudden deterioration and were able to be with her well ahead of the rest of the family. announced at 12.50pm that , , and had started to make their way to Scotland at 12:50. They landed at 3:50, 40 minutes before her death.

With William at the wheel, they drove to Balmoral, but arrived at 5.06pm, nearly two hours after her passing. , meanwhile, left Luton airport onboard a private jet at about 5.30pm. He was still in the air when the announcement of the queen's death was made by Buckingham Palace at 18:30, with news organisations around the immediately relaying the announcement that: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon."

In his book, Hardman also revealed how new king Charles was informed of his mother's death. He had stepped away from her bedside to clear his head and had gone out to gather mushrooms. He received the news that she had died as he was driving back to Balmoral when his took a call. Charles pulled over and was addressed for the first time as 'Your Majesty' - signalling .
