Pregnancy And Sleep: Sleep is very important for health. Even the mother's insomnia can affect the development of the baby in the womb.

Sleep is extremely important for pregnant women. A recent study has shown that less sleep during pregnancy can have a negative impact on the development of children.

This study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that if pregnant women sleep less than seven hours a night, their children have a higher risk of delay in neural development at the age of 6 months to 3 years.

Objectives of the study

Researchers from China analysed sleep data from 7,059 mother-child pairs. Lead author of the study, Dr Peng Zhu, explains that our findings emphasise that sleep quality during pregnancy is important to reduce the risk of long-term cognitive and behavioural problems in children.

Effects on neural development

Researchers also found that pregnant women's sleep affects the fetus' glucose metabolism, which can affect the baby's neural development. The study also observed that boys have a higher risk of these problems than girls.

Causes of lack of sleep during pregnancy

The reason for lack of sleep in pregnant women is due to problems like hormonal changes, discomfort and frequent urination, which are side effects of pregnancy.

Tips to improve sleep

According to experts, for better sleep during pregnancy, one should sleep in a cool and dark room. Along with this, reduce screen time before sleeping, use supportive pillows for comfort.
