After TRAI implemented new rules to stop fake calls and messages, scammers have started adopting new methods to trap people in their net. They are cheating people by making VoIP i.e. internet calls.

A new policy has been implemented by TRAI from October 1, 2024 to curb fake calls and SMS. After the implementation of these new rules, any kind of fake calls and messages are blocked at the network level. Not only this, telecom operators are also bringing technology to block fake calls through AI. In such a situation, scammers are adopting new methods to trap people in their net. Hackers are preparing to trap people in their net through VoIP i.e. internet call. If you also get any such call, then you need to be alert.

Scam through VoIP calls

According to Thailand's telecom regulatory body NBTC, VoIP calls typically start with +697 or +698. These calls made through Voice over Internet Protocol are not easily traceable, which is why scammers use them extensively. Hackers make VoIP calls using VPN i.e. Virtual Private Network, which eliminates their traceability.

  • If you are also getting a call from an international number with +697 or +698, then you should ignore such calls. Such calls are made for online scam or marketing. You can block these numbers.
  • Even if you pick up the phone by mistake, avoid sharing any of your personal information.
  • Many times the scammer will introduce himself as an officer of a government agency, bank etc. In such a case, ask them for a call back number and say that you will call them yourself. If they refuse to give the call back number, then you should understand that this call has been made by a scammer.
