Gauhar Jaan was born in 1873. In Banaras, her mother made the bold choice of starting afresh and sending Gauhar into the world of classical music and dance. Gauhar had taken classical training from the great masters of his time. He learned Kathak from Bindadin Maharaj and also took training in Khayal from Bhaiya Ganpat Rao.
