Dilip Kumar was one of the legendary actors in Bollywood. He left a lasting legacy in the industry. While his professional life often made headlines Dilip Kumars personal life also remained under public scrutiny. He was married to Saira Bano for 16 years. However during this time he decided to marry another woman named Asma Rehman. Although the marriage did not last long Asma had to bear the consequences of this unsuccessful union. Since Rehman had married a superstar she was under intense public scrutiny and her divorce became a hot topic of discussion. It got so bad that she had to move to Canada to escape the attention but even there she faced a “total lack of privacy.” During a 1983 interview held in Vancouver Canada shared by the YouTube channel ITMB Shows Asma opened up about her failed marriage with Dilip Kumar. When asked about people constantly invading her privacy she said “What do I do? Even if I don’t like it but what can one do about it? Even in India the media was after my life and I thought it would be more peaceful in Vancouver but it feels like I am not meant to have peace” she said adding “I feel there is a total lack of privacy no matter where I go. I really don’t like it.” Due to such intense public scrutiny Asma had to move to Canada. When asked about the reason she explained that her primary reasons were family and a desire to escape the public eye. “Firstly I wanted to move here because I have family here. Secondly it was because of the media which was hounding me. I just wanted to get away from it but I just can’t” she said. In the same interview Asma said that much of what was written about her and Dilip was fabricated. “People write whatever they want; they just want to fill up the space” she remarked adding “95 percent of the things that were written about me were false.” Asma insisted that no one knew about the conversations between her and Dilip but people had “wild imaginations.” She concluded by saying “Conversations that take place between two people which are personal and private in nature how can anyone know about them? But these people’s imaginations are just so wild that they make up stories. Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7 2021 at the age of 98.
