Alcohol Storage Rule: There is a party atmosphere at your house, music is playing, snacks are on the table, and you are about to open a bottle of whiskey, scotch or beer for the first time. But then suddenly your house gets raided! The fun of the party gets spoiled because you were not aware of the rules for keeping alcohol. There are certain rules for possessing liquor in India, and if you do not follow them you may have to face legal problems.
Generally, you do not need a license to possess a small amount of alcohol. But if you are storing liquor in large quantities, you will have to obtain a license. These rules differ from state to state.
In Uttar Pradesh, you can have only 1.5 liters of foreign liquor, 2 liters of wine, and 6 liters of beer. According to the District Excise Officer of Gautam Buddha Nagar, you can keep 6 bottles of liquor and 12 cans of beer at home without any receipt. At the same time, the limit of country liquor is 1 litre, and 5 pauvas (200 ml) can be kept in the pouch.
The minimum age for drinking alcohol is also different in different states of India. In some states it is 21 or 25 years, while in Goa, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh this age is 18 years.
If you possess more alcohol than prescribed, you may be punished or fined. There are different punishments for this in different states, but in serious cases, imprisonment up to 10 years or fine can be imposed. In Goa, there is a provision of strict punishment of 7 years for violating the rules. So, the next time you're preparing for a party, keep the alcohol rules in mind.
