New Delhi, 25 October (Hindustan Reporter). Professor Mazhar Asif on Friday assumed charge as the 16th Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). After assuming charge, Asif said that his only aim is to take the university to the highest position.

He was warmly welcomed by the teaching and non-teaching staff of the University at the Vice Chancellor’s Office premises. Immediately after joining, he visited the mausoleum of Brigadier Usman located in the university campus and paid tribute to him. Brigadier Usman is also known as “Lion of Nowshera”. He was a high ranking officer in the Indian Army. He attained martyrdom in the India-Pakistan war of 1947-48.

Professor Mazhar Asif honored the country’s former President Dr. Zakir Hussain and JMI’s founding member Dr. M.A. Paid tribute to Ansari by paying floral tributes at his mausoleum located in the university campus.

The Vice Chancellor met the Deans, Acting Registrar and other senior officials of the University in the meeting hall of the Vice Chancellor’s office. Along with this, he toured the entire administrative block and also visited various offices and met non-teaching staff.

During this, Vice Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif said that his only goal is to take the university to the highest position. He emphasized that he is a student and employee centric person. It is our responsibility to provide good living, food and security to the students of the university.

He said that he welcomes criticism but also expects better suggestions and solutions, so when you come up with a problem, think of better options and solutions.

It is noteworthy that on October 24, President and Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia Draupadi Murmu had appointed Prof. Mazhar Asif, a faculty member of JNU’s School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, as the Vice-Chancellor of JMI. They are appointed for a term of five years from the date of their entry into office or until they attain the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.
