Google Photos announced on Thursday that it will put special labels on photos that have been edited using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. This information will be included in the metadata of the picture, making it easier for any user to identify whether the picture has been created using AI techniques. Apart from this, Google Photos will also highlight images that have been created by combining multiple photos, such as using Pixel's special features Best Take and Add Me.

This new transparency feature has been detailed in Google's blog post. These AI labels will only be applied to photos that have been edited using Google Photos' AI tools, such as Magic Editor and Magic Eraser, although the company did not say whether these labels will also be applied to photos edited with third-party AI tools.

Whenever a user edits a photo in the app using AI tools, Google will add this information to the metadata of the photo file. One advantage of this feature is that even if the photo is cropped or blurred, this information will remain in the metadata.
