Elon Musk, a business magnate, said on Saturday that Wikipedia is run by “left-leaning” activists and asked people not to contribute money to it. Musk attacked Wikipedia in a post on X, his company, claiming that the website had deleted some of the information that was allegedly left-wing.

“Far-left activists are in charge of Wikipedia. Donations to them need to cease,” Musk said. Previously, the US-based website “Pirates Wires” claimed “a coordinated campaign led by around 40 Wikipedia editors has worked to delegitimize Israel, present radical Islamist groups in a favourable light, and position fringe academic views on the Israel-Palestine conflict as mainstream over past years, intensifying after the October 7 attack.”

According to the news outlet, several parts of Wikipedia’s description of Hamas were deleted. “One of these editors successfully removed mention of Hamas’ 1988 charter, which calls for the killing of Jews and the destruction of Israel, from the article on Hamas,” according to the study.

According to the study, the organization also made an effort to further the Iranian government’s objectives. “The group also appeared to attempt to promote the interests of the Iranian government across a number of articles, including deleting “huge quantities of recorded human rights offenses by [Islamic Republic Party] officials”,” further said.

Elon Musk has already expressed disapproval of Wikipedia. He had previously said that the organization didn’t need the amount of money they were requesting from the public. Additionally, he promised Wikipedia a staggering $1 billion in exchange for changing the name to “Dickipedia.” In a previous interview, Jimmy Wales, the creator of Wikipedia, said that he did not take Musk seriously and ignored him.

In an interview with CNBC, he said, “I just ignore him, because we’ve had a verbal battle.” Additionally, he said that Wikipedia does not restrict content selectively. We call what he calls censorship “thoughtful editorial judgment,” which is a whole different issue. Elon will be Elon, you know,” Wales said.
