Salt should be consumed in limited quantity during pregnancy. During pregnancy, salt is very important for the development of the fetus. Iodine is very important for the child. Iodine helps in development of nervous system and brain.

Eating too much salt during pregnancy can increase the risk of complications like preeclampsia, miscarriage, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This is because salt retains water in the body. Which can cause high BP and swelling. Preeclampsia can cause premature delivery, low birth weight, and respiratory problems.

The NHS recommends that pregnant women should limit their salt intake to six grams per day. Here are some tips to reduce salt intake. Limit the use of table sauces like soy sauce, mustard and mayonnaise in packaged foods Avoid adding salt while cooking or after the food is ready Cook at home.
